Cabin Getaway

Thanks to my iphone (cause you know I forgot the camera yet again) we captured some pics from our weekend trip to the Stewart cabin in Brian Head. We had a great time hanging out with good people in the great outdoors. The Phillips clan were great hosts. We slept comfortably and eat way too much good food.

Cole loved being able to roam free. You would've thought we kept him caged in the city. On our Sat. morning hike he happily sang and gave commentary to anyone who'd listen..."I'm hiking in the mountains" ...."Hey Mom, I'm hiking in the mountains"..."Hey everybody, don't worry I have snacks for everyone" and on and on and on...'

He also (much to my annoyance) took claim to a orange whistle that never left his pocket. Greg's rule of no blowing inside or in someone's face didn't hold. Nor did the no biting rule. Gee, I thought we were past that, but he sunk his teeth into two kids and I had the "use your words instead of your mouth" chat...again...

Crew was a happy hiker. I loaded him into the baby pack and he soon fell asleep. However, I did take one fall (gracefully executed, I must say) and heroically saved my babe from injury (whilst skinning my own shin).

We rode ATVs...Cate got a start up lesson from Earnest and she was on her way...and Cole finally, with some trepidation, mounted the "motorcycle" but only when sandwiched between Greg and I. I held his chest with two hands and after he dismounted he was off to boast to the other "cousins" (really they were just new friends, but he thinks any large quantity of kids must be cousins) about his brave ride.

We took archery lessons and learned about Cate's (and now Collin's) hidden talent with the bow and arrow...and Collin spent most of the day perfecting his skill.

Saturday afternoon we headed to Panguitch lake to do what all boys do...throw rocks in the water...And see the most amazing 6-point elk. He was beautiful. We held our breath and he gave us a look that said "That's right, I'm big." and went on his way (with his two women in tow).

Cate, Barb & Annette taking pictures at the lake while the boys threw rocks.

What a great getaway.

Going Gray...Really?

4 months after the purchase of 1 gallon of "Going Gray" Olympic paint, I'm thinking it's more blue than gray. What do you think?

2nd try: "Mountain Top"...still too blue, better, but still blue. Cole's a big boy now, so you can't really can't do baby blue. Gray could last a while...preteen, hopefully?

Try #3: should it be "Gray Ghost"?

The New Normal

I'm recording this one for posterity.

Today marks the beginning of week #4 of back at work with two little ones and a husband who is starting his own business. At the end of last week I admit the question running through my head was "where's the joy"?

I was tired.
And my pants still didn't fit.

The treadmill of my days seem to run together and by the morning of work day 4, I was done.
Cole was crying, "I don't want to go to April's, I wanna stay home with you. " and no amount of reasoning was moving him. He just didn't want to go...and the baby was crying...

So, for the first time since day 1, I was ready to join him. I had been really quite proud of myself (pride comes before the fall, right?). I hadn't lost it at the baby sitter's, I hadn't had to use my emergency makeup kit after a good cry in the car...I was holding it together, even if I kept repeating my silent mantra "I can do this."

So, on work day 4 of work week 3, I gave in.
I cried when my co-worker said hello.
And the river started.
It eventually stopped
and I realized, yet again...
that I WAS making it.

The words I heard on Sunday (while nursing in the mother's lounge and listening to the single's ward sacrament meeting - BTW, I am starting to feel like a member of the singles ward now...but I still can't put a face to a voice yet.) to "do your best and forget the rest" were right on. (Such wise counsel from a father to his children while waiting for the bus with them on the first day of every school year).

So, that's what I'm doing. I'm doing what I can and leaving the rest.

(Even if I did hit Cole in the head with my pump on the way out the door and forget to bring breast milk for the baby this morning).

(Oh, and can I say...thank goodness for the travel sized deodorant in my desk at work. That palm-sized puppy has saved me many a morning).

Wondering...

If formula costs $40 for a big can at Sam's Club, should I be paying myself for breast feeding? Seems only right.

Post edit: With a tip for pumping, of course!
Post post edit: 2 weeks into pumping daily (with only one near mishap)...hope the little guy is off the charts at this week's check-up.
Post post post edit: So, I just checked the price again last night...looks like I rounded up (a bit) I guess its only $20 for a big can.

Conflict Resolution

Playing nice is hard to do at 3 (and sometimes even at 33). Time out!

What about a book?

So, this morning I woke up thinking about my book again...that is, the book I will write someday. I'm not really sure when I started thinking I needed to write a book, I mean its been a thought for a while, I'm just not sure when it started. (maybe after I knew my name would never be in lights...I thought I'd settle for bold print...)

Anyhow, I guess it doesn't really matter when I started to think I needed to do this, but now it seems that I'm ready to start.

But what to write? I know "they" always say "start with what you know." So, what's book worthy about what I know? Is anything I know worthy of a book? I mean my journal is one thing, my blog is another and well then there's those quips of clever facebook status updates (clever might be stretching it), but this is a book. Something pretty and bound. Something with chapters and a title. Oh, and artwork too.

I jokingly thought I need to have some serious trial soon so I'd have something to write. Like the guy who cut his arm off to stay alive or a Mom who struggles with an autistic son. You know, something harrowing. Something triumphant. Something so moving it would be book club worthy. I'm not stretching for the New York Times Best Selling list...but, you know...something good.

So really, what is my goal? To sell copies? To entertain? To enlighten? Or to ease the burden of self expression. To share in words what lies in my soul or at least what bounces around in my brain. Really, is it normal to have a running story always in your head? Maybe I just think my thoughts are really more interesting then they really are. Who knows. I guess we'll see.

A few comments lately have spurred me on. Is this a sign? A blog compliment, a friend telling me to write about what I know right now and another friend telling me she talked to my friend and I need to write a book. Hmmm...

On the drive to work while I bemused about the style and subject of said book, I came up with the title. Really, the title came to me. Usually books have no title until the end or a "working title" Then I thought about chapters and if I'd start at one or jump to the middle. Who knows. I'm just going to let this one flow. So, we'll see.

Wanna know my title? "Working" or not. I'm thinking, the title of my book will be:

The Wish of My Heart

Now think on cover artwork and I'll get to writing.
